Our History

BakerPlatt was established in 2003 by Advocate Stephen Baker and Barrister and compliance expert Stephen Platt, drawing on the strengths of both within the serious financial crime and regulatory sectors of the market. It initially comprised the law firm Baker Associates, now BakerPlatt, and the training arm FSCA, now Forward Training.

A strategic alliance was created with the chambers of Seven Bedford Row, of which Stephen Baker is a tenant, in November 2003; enabling the firm to select teams of expert barristers to meet the specific needs of clients in complex instructions.

In 2006 the firm’s portfolio expanded into the trusts and commercial litigation field. The year also saw BakerPlatt being recommended for the first time in the Legal 500 for its work within its niche practice areas.

The following two years saw continual growth for both the law firm and training arm. In 2007 Senior Crown Advocate Cyril Whelan joined the firm from the Law Officers Department and early 2008 saw the launch of the KYC360 compliance software tool, also a part of the BakerPlatt Group. The law firm benefited further from the recruitment of Jim Scott as Practice Director from Ogiers and David Wilson as Partner from Mourants in 2008.
